Tracy and I met in the summer of 2011. By 2012, I had fallen deeply in love. She was my soulmate, best friend, the person I wanted to spend the rest of my life with, and the one I wished I could marry. Unfortunately, we were unable to be legally wed. But, it didn’t stop us from discussing the possibilities of “one day, maybe.”
On Friday, June 26, 2015, (when the United States made gay marriage a reality), our dreams of getting married become a reality. We were elated, relieved, and excited to start planning our wedding. We wanted it to be simple but elegant, so we sought talented individuals who would share our vision. Our pastor was excited to perform our ceremony. We located an amazing new venue. We found an artistic, incredible photographer and a creative florist. Next on the checklist was finding a make-up artist and a fun DJ.
After a year of planning and anticipation, our day arrived. The weather called for rain, but we vowed that nothing would dampen the day. We had decided to follow the tradition of not seeing each other from the rehearsal dinner until our first look. Since we had become accustomed to doing everything together, getting ready that morning without her was difficult, but so worth it! Seeing Tracy for the first time in her wedding dress took my breath away. I was speechless and had tears in my eyes— she was gorgeous. The day I had longed for and dreamed of for more than 25 years was becoming a reality!
Our nephews escorted our family and friends to their seats. Our brothers walked us down the aisle, where our daughter and nieces waited. The pastor surprised us with a rendition of “Outhouse Love,” which relaxed us and had our guests laughing. The reception was beautiful and the food was delicious. There are no words to describe the feelings of a day like that, one I thought would never happen. Celebrating and sharing it with our family and friends meant so much to us. The day was more perfect than anything we had imagined. We can’t thank everyone enough for helping make our day so special.
