Our wedding was not what I had pictured. Instead, it was beyond anything I could have imagined. Since it was in early May, we lucked out with a beautiful 70-degree spring day. Everything was green from the previous night’s rain and flowers and trees were in full bloom. Spring is my favorite season, because just like a marriage, it resembles the start of something new and the regrowth of things old. Adam and I were embarking on a new journey, one that would expand upon our 12-year relationship that began as high school sweethearts.
We wanted our wedding to be a celebration of our families as much as it celebrated our marriage. The ceremony took place at our church in Houston, Minn., and was filled with personal touches. Our band teacher was our pianist, my parents sang a duet, and a close high school friend recited our readings.
Following the ceremony, we jumped on a bus, with our wedding party, and headed to our reception at the La Crosse Center, stopping along the way at Pettibone Park for fun outdoor photos. At the reception, we saw the room before everyone was seated for dinner. I was in awe at how it all came together. Vintage silver trays and wine goblets were accompanied by freshly picked spring flowers in shades of blush pink and ivory. Our dessert table was filled with hundreds of bars and cake pops atop antique cake stands and platters. Everything was covered in warm candlelight.
The speeches were the highlight of the night, as they kept the crowd crying and laughing. After dinner, we ventured down to Riverside Park with our photographer to take sunset pictures. This gave us a moment to reflect on the day and spend a few moments alone. The party was only just beginning, so we headed back to the reception to kick off the dance, and spent the rest of the night dancing with family and friends. We ended our perfect night with a perfect, hand-in-hand stroll through Riverside Park to The Charmant Hotel.
