08.08.15 Courtney (Rishavy) & Jacob Shones

It all began one night, six years ago, when I was trying to avoid a persistent person on the dance floor. Scanning the room, I noticed a guy who seemed familiar. I asked him if he would pretend to be my boyfriend to get the other guy to leave. Jacob eagerly agreed, and we danced the rest of the night away.

Six years later, Jacob proposed. After a romantic dinner out, we drove back to his house. I was a bit disappointed, because I thought he might propose during dinner, and he didn’t. At home, I went into the bedroom, which was strewn with rose petals, and saw champagne and chocolate-covered strawberries. “Will You Marry Me?” was spelled out in rose petals on the bed and, as I turned around, Jacob was down on one knee. Our fairy tale began there, but I had dreamed of it when I was little—envisioning a beautiful, extravagant, romantic wedding. We had just that! It began with my dream of going to Kleinfeld Bridal in New York to pick out my wedding gown. Diane Barbarro, from “Say Yes to the Dress,” was my consultant, and the designer I love, Pnina Tornai, was also there. Diane custom-fit my Pnina gown.

Wedding planning was time-consuming but worth it. We had a large wedding, with 11 bridesmaids and 11 groomsmen, plus a flower girl, ring bearer, and three personal attendants. When the big day finally
arrived, everything went as planned. More importantly, my grandpa, who was diagnosed with cancer, was able to be there and see us get married. He watched with tears of joy as I walked down the aisle. Grandpa passed away two months after our wedding, so our wedding will always be special to us because we were able to share it with him. TWM
